Abbie Deleers, LVT, UW-AAB
I’m a Licensed Veterinary Technician and Animal Behaviorist with over twenty years of experience in private practice, animal shelters, and volunteer fieldwork. I’ve worked with multiple species including dogs, cats, exotics, and wildlife. Growing up on a small farm in the Whidbey Island wilderness I’ve always had a soft spot for the misfits — I was that kid who brought home stray or injured animals, and it eventually became my life’s work.
After attending the Pierce College Veterinary Technician program, I had the privilege of studying under Doctors James and Renee Ha to earn my Certificate of Applied Animal Behavior from the University of Washington. My mentorship with veteran Seattle dog training expert Judith Anderson-Wright, MA, CPDT-KA has enhanced my practical skills. My work has allowed me to interact with animals in a variety of settings, always reminding me of the importance of adaptability in honoring each unique situation. I gained a deep compassion for animals who had a tough start in life and the behavioral challenges they can carry.
I live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest with my hubby, one goofy husky mix, and three delightful cats. I enjoy travel, hiking/camping, games, and making short films.
My Training Philosophy
Most of my training experience has been with dogs and cats (yes, cats can be trained too!), but I’m always happy to work with any species.
I follow the humane training protocols of LIMA: Least Invasive Minimally Aversive. As a proud nerd, I only use scientifically proven positive reinforcement and reward-based methods. I will never use pain, fear, or punishment (shock or prong collars, yelling, physical violence, etc.) when working with any animal. Not only are those methods abusive, multiple studies show them to produce more unwanted behaviors and erode the human/animal bond.
I love finding ways to have fun during the training process. We’ll create a protocol based on your pet’s individual needs (and yours) to set them up for success as they learn and grow. I won’t pressure your pet or place an arbitrary timeline on their progress. I prefer an approach that allows you and your pet to respect each other’s needs and boundaries while still letting them be themselves.
Your animal companion is one of a kind. Just as important as showing you the “how” to achieve specific results, we’ll explore the “why” your pet does what they do, and we’ll work as a team to strengthen your bond and rock your best lives together!
